The crankshaft is mounted in the machine with the front of the crankshaft secured in an adjustable three jaw chuck. The rear of the crankshaft is supported at the flywheel end using a fixed centre held in the tailstock and located in the spigot bearing aperture. A dial indicator gauge mounted on the machine base is used to show any run out at the nose end and by adjusting the special three jaw chuck the crankshaft is set to run perfectly concentrically. Run out at the flywheel end is then checked before grinding begins.

Thread Tools Show Printable Version. Learning Crankshaft Grinding? Ok, the boss at work says the shop is very tight on time but I still want to learn how to run the manual Crankshaft grinder we have, the machinist that normal runs it is willing to teach me.
Pretty short sighted on the boss's part. Does the main guy ever take vacation or get sick? Can you manually OD grind already? And that includes hitting radius tolerances against a wall. If you can do that already, then it's just one more step for the crank.
What brand of Crankshaft Grinder do you have in the shop? Learning or experience to Od Grind would be a great advantage but not mandatory. One thing that cannot be overstated with Crankshaft grinding is the radius dressing and ensuring you have the right size. Reducing the radius or badly dressed wheel will see broken cranks especially on a Diesel. Sorry if you have no shaft grinding experience probably not a good idea to try and jump on a machine without on the job type tutoring from a experienced operator breaking a crank grinding wheel can be quite dangerous.
Try and talk the existing operator to try and teach you after hours. Joe Miranda liked this post. Originally Posted by winger.

Rods or crankpins not so much, because the eccentricity or offset of the mains needs to be the same both as to angle and amount, at both ends.
I watched the old guy grind one of the crankpins on my shaft crooked, and not wanting to offend I said nothing, but later asked how to get same offset both ends. Maybe I failed to make the question clear. Only answer I came up with was to make a dial indicator base that would ride the machine bed, and sweep a main at both ends as I adjusted the offsets, until the high reading s were the same and at same clock position.
I saw no way on the old machine he had to get proper angular relationship of crankpins on a V-8 or other non-flat crank. I'm all ears or eyes.
